SKIING JACKETS
Alpine ski jackets, also known as snow jackets, are essential garments designed to provide protection and comfort to skiers in cold and snowy mountain environments.
Here are some key features and characteristics of alpine ski jackets:
Waterproof and breathable: Alpine ski jackets are usually made of waterproof and breathable materials to keep the skier dry in wet and snowy conditions. They are often made from specialized fabrics such as Gore-Tex or similar membranes that provide both waterproofing and breathability. These materials keep moisture out of the jacket while allowing sweat and body heat to escape, providing comfort during strenuous physical activity.
Insulation: Ski jackets are insulated to provide warmth in cold weather. The insulation material can vary, but typically down feathers, synthetic fibers such as PrimaLoft, or a combination of the two are used.
Windproof: To protect against strong winds, alpine ski jackets often have windproof outer shells. The outer fabric is tightly woven or treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish to reduce air permeability, preventing wind chill from affecting the skier's body heat.
In addition, adjustable cuffs with internal wrist gaiters ensure a snug fit around the wrists, preventing snow and cold drafts.
Ventilation: Ski jackets often have underarm vents or zippers to allow for more airflow and temperature regulation when the skier overheats. These vents can be opened or closed to control body temperature and moisture levels during intense physical activity.
Pockets and Storage: Alpine ski jackets usually offer multiple pockets for easy storage of essential items. These pockets can include hand warmer pockets, chest pockets, sleeve pockets and internal pockets for storing goggles, ski passes, smartphones and other small valuables.
Reflective elements: Some ski jackets have reflective elements, such as logos, strips or piping, to improve visibility in low-light conditions, improving safety on the slopes.
Factors such as climate, intended use, personal preference and budget are important factors to consider when choosing an alpine ski jacket. Different jackets offer different levels of insulation, waterproofing and features tailored to specific skiing disciplines, from alpine to backcountry skiing. It is recommended to try on different jackets and consult with knowledgeable staff to find the best fit and features for your needs.
